Alamos Gold: The Argonaut Gold Acquisition Will Boost Production And Deliver Substantial Synergies

Alamos Gold Inc (TSX:AGI, NYSE:AGI) announced that it will be acquiring rival Argonaut Gold Inc (TSX:AR) in a US$325 million all-stock deal which will create one of the largest gold mines in Canada. Alamos' Island Gold Mine in Ontario is located next to Argonaut's Magino mine.

Argonaut Gold Inc (TSX:AR) shares slid 12% to $0.38 in late-morning trading on Monday after the gold producer with a portfolio of operations in North America announced plans to raise gross proceeds of about C$80 million, via a bought deal public offering, by issuing 210,527,000 company common shares at a price of C$0.38 per share.   Argonaut said net proceeds of the offering will be used to fund development and optimization of its Magino mine in Ontario and Florida Canyon mine in Nevada as well as for general working capital purposes.

Argonaut Gold reported Q3 production of ~53,900 gold-equivalent ounces, a 17% increase from the previous year, but below expectations. Unfortunately, the company faced unplanned downtime at its Magino mine, resulting in lower-than-expected production and had to sell an additional 1.0% NSR to raise cash. In this update, we'll dig into the Q3 results, the updated valuation, and whether the stock is now back to offering an adequate margin of safety below US$0.30.

Argonaut did in early May report its Q1-23 result, which was mostly in line with guidance, and the consolidated figures will improve drastically with Magino coming online. First gold pour is now due to be announced in the next couple of weeks and commercial production is expected in Q3-23. Argonaut stock still trades with an attractive valuation, despite a relatively strong stock price performance in 2023.
