Widely carried by American law enforcement for much of the 20th century, revolvers have been all but replaced in professional circles by semi-automatic pistols in recent decades. Law enforcement’s transition to semi-automatics is attributable to several advantages pistols have over their wheel-gun counterparts, which generally include greater magazine capacity, faster reload times, and slimmer profiles. Key Points While not nearly as popular as semi-automatic pistols, revolvers have several key advantages over more modern handgun designs — and these advantages have ensured the wheel gun’s continued relevance. The .357 Magnum has long stood out as one of the most popular revolver rounds in the United States, and the market for .357 revolvers is dominated by just a small handful of companies. One of only a handful of countries where gun ownership is a constitutional right, and the only country home to more firearms than people, the United States has a gun culture unlike any anywhere else in the world. Arms and ammunition are also big business in the U.S., generating over $90 billion in economic output annually. Key Points With thousands of federally licensed gunmakers across the United States, arms and ammunition is a multi-billion dollar American industry. Every state in the country has its own arms manufacturing industry, and in each state, a single gunmaker stands out for producing more firearms than its competitors in 2023. In several cases a single company has transformed its home state into a firearm manufacturing hub. I rate Sturm, Ruger & Company as a HOLD due to low leisure gun sales growth and high risk-to-return ratio for long-term investment. Despite missing earnings and revenue forecasts, RGR remains debt-free, but its revenue and net income have been declining over the past decade. The company's dividend has decreased significantly, and its current yield is lower than U.S. Treasury notes, making it less attractive for long-term investors.
In March 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court signaled its readiness to oppose a lawsuit levied by Mexico against U.S. gun manufacturers. The lawsuit claimed that U.S. gun manufacturers were willfully and deliberately turning an eye to gun sales that were being trafficked over the border and into the hands of Mexican cartels. In the lawsuit, several gun manufacturers were named, including (but not nearly limited to) Colt and Smith & Wesson. Cate Stetson, a lawyer representing Mexico, argued that certain gun manufacturers “supply dealers with all the guns they can pay for, without any public safety conditions, even if a gun dealer has been repeatedly found to have violated gun laws, been indicted.” At this time, the case is still in relatively early stages and will most likely have to make it through the lower courts before it ever gets the chance to be heard by the Supreme Court — if it even makes it that far. Despite these gun manufacturers being involved in the lawsuit,
Despite past bearish predictions, current data suggests Sturm, Ruger & Company is stabilizing post-pandemic, with revenue and profitability returning to normal levels. The company faces declining gun popularity and background checks due to this stabilization, but political and economic uncertainties may drive future gun sales. Sturm, Ruger & Company's strong net cash position and low price-to-book multiple make it a potential buyout candidate.

Although it varies by state, spring turkey hunting season is just beginning in many parts of the country. Wild turkeys may be considered small game, but these big birds can weigh up to 25 pounds, providing a lot of food for a family. Though hunting for wild turkeys can occur in fall, it’s generally considered a spring activity, allowed in April and May. (Is hunting popular in your state? Check out the state with the most hunters.) While most hunters commonly use shotguns for turkey hunting, some states do allow rifles. And in some states, it’s legal to hunt wild turkey using a rifle in the spring, but not in the fall. You’ll have to check your state, as laws can vary. 24/7 Wall St. took a deep dive to find out which companies are making the best-selling America-made rifles. Ruger and Smith & Wesson are both strong brands, but I favor Ruger due to its debt-free balance sheet and effective management. Both companies have low growth prospects, and neither is currently priced attractively enough to warrant investment. Ruger's management impressed me with their strategic acquisition of Marlin and working through a period of slow sales without taking on debt.
