June saw strong tech-led gains, which helped to drive the broader equity indexes to new all-time highs. This was a continuation of what we saw last month, further bouncing off those lows we saw in April. With that said, I still do some buying every month to help compound and generate a growing stream of cash flow going forward.

For income investors, closed-end funds remain an attractive investment class that covers various asset classes and promises high distributions and reasonable total returns. Closed-end funds, or CEFs, are generally characterized by higher volatility and deeper drawdowns than the broader market. For these reasons, they are not suited for everyone. In this monthly series, we highlight five CEFs with solid track records that pay high distributions and offer "excess" discounts. We try to separate the wheat from the chaff using our filtering process to select just five CEFs every month from around 500 closed-end funds.

Closed-end funds offer unique opportunities due to the structure, which allows for the share price to swing wildly different from the underlying portfolio value. There are activist groups that specifically target these in a way to take advantage of this feature within the closed-end fund space. On top of that, it also provides significant diversification by investing in already diversified CEFs, and additionally, this can translate into strong monthly distributions.

The Special Opportunities Fund is an investment I have looked at before, and was impressed with. I recommended it for income investors in the past. However, further review shows some cracks in the foundation, with odd reporting times and confusing tax paperwork where the fund managers contradict themselves. Despite this, the fund has proven to be a solid investment in the past, with a decent dividend record, and a unique asset mix that is not found in other funds.

Total Return can be misleading if not supported by NAV growth, as it may include unsustainable distributions and Return of Capital. Behavioral finance shows markets are irrational, making it crucial to consider practical aspects beyond theoretical Total Return calculations. I believe that NAV performance can affect our discretion in the reinvestment choices for the distributions we receive from our savings much more than Total Return.

The Special Opportunities Fund offers a unique investment strategy by focusing on discounted CEFs, BDCs, and SPACs, potentially defying bearish market trends. SPE's high yield, primarily from CEF and BDC holdings, supports its dividend, but a deeper discount to NAV is needed for a Buy. The fund's healthy balance sheet, limited leverage, and strategic share repurchases enhance its intrinsic value and potential for positive returns.
