In late May, shares of Greece-based Capesize pure play Seanergy Maritime Holdings sold off to new all-time lows after the company reported seasonally weak first-quarter results. Since that time, Capesize charter rates have moved even lower but Seanergy's common shares have rallied approximately 20% over the past couple of weeks. After the close of Wednesday's session, an entity affiliated with Costamare Inc.'s Chairman and CEO Konstantinos V. Konstantakopoulos disclosed a new 5.1% stake in the company.
Costamare's preferred stocks have performed as expected, maintaining their value while paying high-single-digit dividends. However, the common stock has underperformed despite the company's financial progress. Costamare's dry bulk segment may be grappling with industry weakness; however, its containership fixtures should continue to generate substantial profits. Costamare's capital returns have been inferior to industry peers, while its investment in Neptune remains speculative.
Two years ago, container ship operator Costamare decided to try its hand at the dry bulk shipping business. Last year, it chose to deepen its ties to dry bulk shipping.

Despite the increased age of its fleet, CMRE has done a great job securing long-term time charters for its container vessels, thus, offsetting the weak dry bulk spot market.
